State Command Sergeant Major

Command Sgt. Maj. Caleb M. Smith joined the New Hampshire National Guard in May of 2000, in Battery C, 1-172nd Field Artillery in Portsmouth, NH. His significant assignments include Chief, Fire Direction at BTRY C, 1-172nd FA; Launcher Chief and Training NCO, BTRY C, 3-197th FAR; Platoon Sergeant and Readiness NCO, BTRY C, 3-197th FAR; Field Artillery Master Gunner and Assistant Operations NCO, HHB, 3-197th FAR; Operations NCO, 3-197th FAR; First Sergeant, HHB, 3-197th FAR; Operations Sergeant, Fires Cell, 197th FAB; Operations Sergeant Major, 197th FAB, and Command Sergeant Major, 54th Troop Command.

CSM Smith has four deployments. From 2004-2005, he deployed to Camp Bucca, Iraq as an in-lieu of military policeman, conducting detainee operations, area security, and convoy escorts. From 2010-2011, he deployed to Camp Buehring, Kuwait as a platoon sergeant and conducted long haul convoy escorts throughout Iraq. From 2015-2016, he deployed to the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Kuwait as a first sergeant, conducting a HIMARS mission in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Spartan Shield. From 2022-2023, he deployed to Jordan as the Operations Sergeant Major for the USARCENT Force Field Artillery Headquarters, in support of Operations Spartan Shield and Inherent Resolve. Smith has completed all levels of non-commissioned officer education, including graduation from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in 2021. He has also completed the NATO NCO Intermediate Leadership Course, Level 1 Sexual Assault Advocate, and Joint Firepower.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (4th Award), the Army Commendation Medal (6th Award), the Iraq Campaign Medal (3 campaign stars), NHNG NCO of the Year Ribbon (2006), Louisiana Emergency Service Medal, the Field Artillery Master Gunner Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.

CSM Smith holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Hampshire in Management. He is in current pursuit of a Master of Science in Leadership from UNH.

CSM Smith and his wife Madison live on the coast of Maine with daughter Emma, son Elliott, and sheepdog, Basil.
