Command Sgt. Maj. William M. Ferland

State Command Sergeant Major

Command Sgt. Maj. William M. Ferland assumed duties as the 13th New Hampshire Army National Guard State Command Sergeant Major on October 1, 2020. Ferland serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the the Adjutant General of New Hampshire, as well as to the commander and senior staff of the New Hampshire Army National Guard. In his role as State CSM, he provides guidance on the training, development and welfare of the enlisted force and upholds the standards and traditions of the New Hampshire Army National Guard.

Ferland enlisted in the New Hampshire Army National Guard on August 22, 1984 where he began his 36-year career as a traditional guardsman. He first served as a 44B Metal Worker in Service Battery, 3-197th Field Artillery, until August of 1992.

Assignments include: 3643rd Security Force – Company Operations Sergeant; Alpha Company, 3643d Brigade Support Battalion – Company First Sergeant; Charlie Company, 3-197th Task Force – Company First Sergeant; 3-197th Field Artillery Regiment - Battalion Command Sergeant Major; 54th Troop Command – Battalion Command Sergeant Major; 197th Field Artillery Brigade – Brigade Command Sergeant Major

Deployments Include: Operation Iraqi Freedom (2006) - Operations Sergeant, 3643rd SECFOR; Operation New Dawn (2010) – First Sergeant, Charlie Co. Task Force 3-197th SECFOR; Operation Spartan Shield (2015) – Command Sergeant Major, 3-197th Field Artillery Regiment

Awards include: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), The order of Saint Barbara Award

Command Sgt. Maj. Ferland holds an Associate’s degree in Electronics Technology. He completed all levels of noncommissioned officer education courses, including the Sergeant Major Course, class #40.  His military occupational specialties include: 44B Metal Worker; 63H ASI-H8 Track Vehicle Repair - Track Vehicle recovery; 88M Motor Transport Operator, and 92A Automated Logistics Specialists.

He has spent the past 26 years working in the electronics industry. He is currently taking a leave of absence from his position as the Corporate Environmental Compliance Engineer at Extreme Networks in order to serve full time as the 13th New Hampshire Army National Guard State Command Sergeant Major.

Ferland resides in Somersworth, New Hampshire with his wife, Joni.  They have two adult daughters, Tori and Haley.
