Rewarding Command

By Staff Sgt. David Marquis

The 197th Field Artillery Brigade held a change of command Dec. 7 at the Manchester armory. Col. Davis Ulricson relinquished command to Lt. Col. Jeffrey Samon, culminating a tenure that saw one of the New Hampshire National Guard's most storied combat units achieve new heights of operational excellence.

“These past three years have been the most rewarding of my career,” said Ulricson in his farewell address. “The soldiers of this brigade are exceptional, embodying the highest standards of skill, teamwork, and resilience.”

Steeped in military tradition, the ceremony included the symbolic passing of the brigade colors — a gesture signifying the transfer of authority and responsibility. Brig. Gen. John LeBlanc, commander of the NHARNG, presided over the event, praising Ulricson's leadership and expressing confidence in Samon's abilities to guide the brigade into the future.

“Davis Ulricson was a commander and leader the troops could rally to,” LeBlanc said. “The breadth and scale of what he and the soldiers of the 197th accomplished during his command is truly remarkable.”

Ulricson, who commanded the 197th FAB for more than three years, reflected on the unit’s accomplishments. Under his leadership, the brigade deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield and Inherent Resolve and participated in major exercises such as Arctic Defender and Avenger Triad. The brigade pioneered new partnerships, advanced radar and targeting capabilities, and oversaw critical deployments to the Middle East and Europe, Ulricson said. He credited the brigade’s success to the dedication of its soldiers and leadership teams.

“I leave knowing this brigade is in excellent hands with Lt. Col. Samon,” Ulricson said. “Work as hard for him as you did for me, and the brigade will continue to exceed expectations.”

Samon, who recently served as chief of Fires Integration for U.S. Army Europe and Africa, addressed the soldiers and guests with a message of readiness and teamwork. Drawing on his experience overseas, Samon emphasized the importance of adapting to modern warfare.

“As this day, December 7th, should remind us, we are often one miscalculation away from defending our nation and its interests,” Samon said. “During my tenure, I pledge to provide leadership and guidance as we prepare for whatever challenges may arise.”

Samon also expressed gratitude to his family, particularly his wife Lorelei, for their support throughout his military career. “I love you, wife,” he said with a smile. “Thank you for allowing me to serve.”

The ceremony featured the presentation of the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara to Ulricson, a prestigious recognition within the field artillery community. Families of both commanders were honored with bouquets symbolizing farewell and new beginnings.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to the brigade’s motto, “Granite Thunder,” and the enduring spirit of the New Hampshire Army National Guard: Live Free or Die.
