Chris Horton was killed while serving as a sniper with the Oklahoma National Guard’s 1st Battalion of the 279 Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Paktia, Afghanistan, Sept. 9, 2011. In 2019 a fellow Guard sniper, Staff Sgt. Tim Horton with the Nebraska National Guard’s 2nd Battalion of the 134th Infantry Regiment (Airborne), also part of the 45th IBCT, initiated a memorial sniper competition to honor Horton.
