Managing Expectations

Living by the motto “Always Ready, Always There” is easier said than done for NH guardsmen trying to balance their military obligation with their civilian job. Over the last three months, more than 250 NH citizen soldiers and airmen have been supporting Operation Winter Surge, the state’s current pandemic relief efforts. They have been working at hospitals, nursing homes, the men's state prison, the state warehouse and the Department of Health and Human Services.

NH Guardsman helps rescue woman from burning home

Traveling south on Route 3 along the New Hampshire-Vermont border, Pfc. Liam MacVittie was about 30 minutes into what would have been a three-and-a-half-hour drive when he noticed smoke billowing from a roadside mobile home. Without hesitation, he turned his car around and headed down a small dirt road in Stratford, New Hampshire, to discover a residence nearly engulfed in flames.

The Real Heroes

The effects of COVID fatigue have been felt in healthcare facilities across the state and Peterborough’s Monadnock Community Hospital, which serves seven towns, is no exception. “It has been really tiring,” said Katharyn Ernst, the hospital's philanthropy and community relations coordinator. “[Our staff] have family, they have lives, and they are working 72-plus hours. They were giving up their holidays and trying to cover shifts for each other.” Helping ease the burden are six NH guardsmen assigned to the state’s COVID relief mission, Operation Winter Surge.

Guardsmen backfill staffing shortage at NH prison

A detachment of New Hampshire guardsmen returned to the state prison Jan. 12. For the next two months, 25 soldiers and airmen will assist corrections workers in Concord with safety and security operations, the same mission they supported a year ago at the height of the state’s pandemic relief efforts.

Chad Logan of the 157th Maintenance Group have been working in Exeter Hospital’s food and nutrition department for more than a month. They are a part of the New Hampshire National Guards’ latest COVID-19 relief mission Operation Winter Surge.
